Tutankhamun was a Pharaoh with a paradoxical fate. He has done nothing significant – and could not do: on the throne a child, died a young man, and yet he is known not less than the greatest rulers of Egypt. The glory of Tutankhamun is in his tomb, miraculously escaped the looting, and in a mysterious curse.
Tutankhamun’s tomb was opened in 1922. The expedition was headed by two archaeologist – professional scientist G. Carter and Egyptologist-enthusiast, Lord George. Carnarvon, financed the excavations. The discovery was a lot, and a rare publication without mention of the notorious curse – a series of mysterious deaths among the participants of the opening of the tomb.
Do not always say this in a mystical way – in the natural there is no shortage of explanations: ancient bacteria, against which modern humans had no immunity, mold, poisonous blend of fragrance flowers Queen of the sarcophagus spouse, radiation and even… aesthetic impression produced by the interior of the tomb. But first you should answer the question whether the curse?
If you turn away from the newspaper gossip of those times, and access to reliable facts, it seems that the curse acted selectively: not affected main «Defiler», the Carter, lived to an old age daughter of J. Of Carnarvon, descended into the tomb, along with his father, and even a 57-year-old American archaeologist J. Brasted-lived after the opening of the tomb 13 years and died at the age of 70 – quite normal lifespan.
Lord J. Carnarvon, archaeologist A. Mace, U.S. financed J. Gould and radiologist A. Douglas-Reid had the temerity to go after the excavations in Cairo, where raged the epidemic fever of the middle of the Nile – the impact of the disease and destroyed them. J. Caernarfon, for many years suffered from pulmonary disease, died first, in the next year A. Douglas-Reid, the other two lived a few years longer, but their health was severely compromised. G. Carter saved by the fact that he lingered in the Valley of the kings for a few months.
Egyptologists have not adopted the talk about the «curse» seriously because what they are learning about civilization such a concept is not inherent. In the famous «threatening» inscriptions from the tombs of the God of death Anubis promises not to protect the deceased from intruders and from the advancing desert, «I don’t give to strangle this sand tomb». Ancient Egyptian criminals precisely because scientists have left so few intact tombs, that about any «curse of the pharaohs» they didn’t hear.
But if «the curse» appeared, so someone was interested. The opening of Egyptologists has aroused interest not only in the scientific world – about it wrote Newspapers, considerably increasing circulation at the expense of the reader’s curiosity. But to maintain the interest of the public to the excavations it was impossible, describing the daily work of archaeologists, needed new sensation, and they were not. From this point of view the death of Lord George.Caernarfon came in very handy, besides the journalists were on to something: about a century before the events described was published novel by English writer J. L. Webb, «the Mummy», which featured the Pharaoh’s curse.
After the material about the «curse of Tutankhamun» was published in a newspaper, other publications could easily reprint it from each other, multiplying the number of victims – because the readers could not verify whether he died by some French reporter or Egyptian work. Eventually the curse began to attribute the death of even people who never were engaged in excavation and had not visited Egypt for example, the suicide of Lord Westbury.
The secret of the curse of Tutankhamen’s tomb to decipher not – it doesn’t exist. The curse of «created» is not ancient Egyptian priests, and journalists.
