Restore data and files on Android

In this tutorial about how to recover data on Android in cases where you have accidentally formatted your memory card, deleted photos or other files from the internal memory, did a Hard Reset (reset phone to factory settings) or is there something else, which has to find ways to bring back your lost files.

From the moment when the instruction to restore data on Android devices was first published (now, in 2016 is almost completely rewritten), some things had changed and the main change is how Android works with internal storage and as modern phones and tablets with Android connect to the computer.

If they had connected as a regular USB drive, allowing not to use any special tools, would be the regular program for data recovery (by the way, and now it is better to use them if the data is deleted from the memory card on the phone, for example, there are suitable recovery in the free program Recuva), now the majority of Android devices connected as a media player via MTP and can’t change it (i.e. no way to connect the device as USB Mass Storage).

In this regard, many methods for recovering data from Android, which worked previously, now fail. Also unlikely was the successful recovery of data from your phone, reset to factory settings, due to the fact exactly how your erased data in some cases is enabled by default encryption.

The review tools (free and paid), which, theoretically, can help you to restore files and data from your phone or tablet connecting via MTP, and, at the end of the article you will find some tips that may be useful if none of the methods not helped.

Data recovery for Wondershare Dr. Fone for Android

The first recovery software for Android, which relatively successfully returns a file with some smartphones and tablets (but not all) Wondershare Dr. Fone for Android. The app is paid, but a free trial allows you to see, and is it even possible to restore something and show a list of data, photos, contacts and messages to restore (provided that Dr. Fone will be able to detect your device).

The principle of operation of the program is as follows: you set it in Windows 10, 8 or Windows 7, connect Android device to PC and enable USB debugging. After that Dr. Fone for Android tries to identify your phone or tablet and install root-access on it, when you can successfully restore files, and upon completion, disables root. Unfortunately, for some devices it fails.

GT Recovery for Android

Next, at this time a free program that can be effective for modern Android devices is the app GT Recovery that is installed on the phone itself and scans the internal memory of the phone or tablet.

My app is not tested (due to difficulties with obtaining Root rights on the device), but the reviews on Play store indicate that, when possible, GT Recovery for Android quite successfully cope with the recovery of photos, videos and other data, allowing to recover at least some of them.

An important condition for the use of the application (so that it can scan the internal memory for recovery) — for Root access, which you can obtain by finding the proper instructions for your model of Android device or by using simple free software, see Obtaining Android rooting in Kingo Root.

Download GT Recovery for Android from official Google Play.

EASEUS Mobisaver for Android Free

EASEUS Mobisaver for Android Free — freeware for data recovery on Android phones and tablets, very similar to the first of the utilities, but allows you to not only look at what is available for restore, but also to save these files.

However, unlike Dr. Fone Mobisaver for Android requires that you have previously gained Root access on your device by yourself (how to do it, pointed out above). And only after that the program will be able to search for deleted files on your Android.

If you are unable to recover data from Android

As noted above, the probability of successful recovery of data and files on Android device from internal memory lower than the same procedure for memory cards, flash drives and other USB storage devices (which are defined as a drive in Windows and other operating systems).

But because it’s possible that none of the proposed methods will not help you. In this case, I recommend, if you haven’t already done so, try the following:

  • Go to the address photos.google.com by signing in with your account data on your Android device. It may be that the photos you want to restore, synchronized with your account and you will find them in one piece.
  • If you need to restore the contacts, likewise go to contacts.google.com — there is a chance that there you will find all your contacts from your phone (though interspersed with those with whom you had corresponded by e-mail).

Hope some of this proves useful to you. Well, for the future — try to use synchronization of critical data storage to Google or other cloud services such as OneDrive.

Note: the following describes another program (previously free) which, however, recovers files from Android only when they connect as a USB Mass Storage that for most modern devices is irrelevant.

The data recovery software 7-Data Android Recovery

When I last wrote about another app from the developer of 7-Data that allows you to recover files from a flash drive or hard disk, I noticed that on their website there is a version of the program that is designed to recover data from Android internal memory or inserted in your phone (tablet) micro SD memory card. Immediately thought it would be a good topic for a future article.

Download Android Recovery from the official website http://7datarecovery.com/android-data-recovery/. Thus, at this point the program is completely free.

At the end of the process search file displays the folder structure that was able to find. You can see what is in them, and in the case of photos, music and documents is to use the preview function.

Preview photos before recovery

Once you have selected the files you want to recover, click the «Save» button and save them to your computer. Important note: do not save files on the same media from which you performed the data recovery.

Strange, but I haven’t recovered: the program wrote a Beta Version Expired (I installed it today), although the official website says that there are no restrictions. There is a suspicion that it is because it is the morning of October 1, and the version, apparently, is updated once a month and they have not had time to update it on the website. So I think by the time you read this, everything will work at its best. As I said above, a data recovery in this program is completely free.
