What distinguishes the touchscreen from the display?

Touchscreen a type of display that is in demand in various industries of electronic equipment. What are the specifics of this device? What distinguishes the touchscreen from the display of classical type?

What is the touchscreen?

Under the touchscreen is taken to mean any touch screen is the one that you can control with the touch of a finger or by using an additional device (an electronic pen, stylus, etc.). The first touchscreen was invented in the 70-ies. The device is equipped with them, appeared on the market in the ‘ 80s.

Sometimes referred to as a touchscreen only part of the touch screen is directly the one that is responsible for processing signals, formed as a result of contact with the user’s finger or by a machine. But this element, strictly speaking, has its own name — the «active panel» or «membrane». This element is located between the on-screen matrix, where the image is built, and the exterior protective glass.

Initially, touch screens are used mainly in industry, in medicine — as a control various types of equipment. Later the touchscreen started to be engaged in the production of devices focused on the consumer sector, computers, smartphones, tablets, game consoles. Touch screens were intended to replace the traditional hardware controls relevant devices — keyboards, mice, joysticks, etc. In fact the way it happened — these types of devices, equipped with a touchscreen, in many cases do not require connection of additional management tools.

Touch screens also are utilized as hardware components of ATMs, payment terminals and other devices of similar purpose.

The main advantages of touchscreens:

  • easy to control;
  • compactness (traditional display and the touchscreen are no different in size);
  • the compactness from the point of view of the size of the device, installed the touchscreen (as we noted above, in many cases it is not necessary to connect external control components — the keyboard, the mouse);
  • the functionality (touch screen allows you to enter text, move objects on the screen to control the characters in the games and to perform many other useful actions).

Have touch screens and disadvantages:

  • sensitivity to mechanical impact and easy repairability;
  • additional power consumption;
  • the lack of tactile response on pressing that often complicates the use of touchscreens for people who are accustomed to work with the keyboard.

It can be noted that touchscreens are almost always assembled based on LCD, LED or OLED matrix. Electron beam touchscreens — is extremely rare devices.

What about «non-touch», classic displays? In fact, all that distinguishes them from touchscreens is the lack in the design of those elements that are able to become tools for managing on-screen content. Classic displays can only display data. To enter information necessary to use third-party devices — keyboard, mouse, joystick.

Classic displays available on the market in those same technological improvements, and touch — LCD, LED, OLED. They are also electron-beam — and in this case they are almost guaranteed to not be touchscreens.

to contents ↑the Difference between touchscreen and display

The main difference between the touchscreen display from classic type — design of the first elements that can convert an external touch (with your finger or a special device) into digital signals. With their help it can be managed device is connected to the touch screen.

The distinction between the terms «touchscreen» and «display» is found at the level of the conceptual framework: as we noted above, «touch» is sometimes called a part of the display, which is directly responsible for converting external touch into digital signals.

Touchscreens in the sense of «touch screen» is rarely represented in the electron beam modification. In turn, a significant part of the classic displays — namely electron beam.

Defining the difference between the touchscreen and display of the traditional type, will record findings on a small table.

Display (traditional type)

What is common between them?

The information displayed on the screen in both devices is on the same technological principles involved the display matrix type LCD, LCD, OLED

What is the difference between them?

Is a display touch type, able to convert external touch digital control signals of the display content
Not able to convert an external touch signal into a digital

Rarely represented in the electron beam modifications
A significant part of the traditional display type — cathode ray

Touchscreen (hardware component)
Display (touch)

The touchscreen is sometimes called the active panel or membrane which is a hardware component of the touch screen that is responsible for translating external touch into digital signals
Is an integrated device, the design of which uses touch screen
