Clean boot in Windows 10, 8 and Windows 7 (not to be confused with a clean installation, refers to install OS with flash drive or disc with the removal of the previous system) allows you to fix system problems caused by improper operation of the programs, conflicts, drivers and Windows services.

Something clean boot (clean boot) similar to safe mode (see How to log in Windows safe mode 10), but is not the same. If you have logged in safe mode, Windows disables almost everything that is not required for startup, and to use the «standard driver» no hardware acceleration and other functions (which can be useful when correcting problems with hardware and drivers).

When using a clean boot of Windows, it is assumed that the operating system and hardware are working properly, but at startup don’t load components from third-party developers. This start option is suitable for those occasions when you need to identify problematic or conflicting software, a third party service, could interfere with normal operation of the OS. Important: in order to configure a clean boot, you must be an administrator on the system.

How to perform a clean boot Windows 10 and Windows 8

In order to perform clean startup in Windows 10, 8 and 8.1, press Win+R on your keyboard (Win — logo key operating system) and type msconfig in the Run window, click OK. A window will open «system Configuration».

Next in order follow the following steps

  • On the General tab select «Selective startup» and uncheck «Load startup items». Note: I have no accurate information, does it effect and is it mandatory for a clean boot in Windows 10 and 8 (in 7-ke is definitely working, and there is reason to believe that there is).
  • On the contribution of «Services» check «hide Microsoft services» and then, in the presence of third-party services, click the «Disable all».
  • Click on the tab «startup» and click «Open task Manager».
  • Task Manager opens on the tab «startup». Click on each item in the list, right-click and select «Disable» (or do it using the button at the bottom of the list for every item).
  • Close the task Manager and click «OK» in the configuration window of the system.
  • After that, restart your computer will go up clean download Windows. Further, in order to return to normal system boot, reset all changes made to the initial state.

Anticipating the question of why we’re double-turning off startup items: the fact that a simple unmark the «Load startup items» does not deactivate all startup programs (and probably never disables them in 10-ke and 8-ke, what I mentioned in point 1).

    Clean boot Windows 7

The steps for a clean boot in Windows 7 are almost indistinguishable from those that were listed above, except for items related to additional disabling startup items — these steps in Windows 7 are not needed. Ie steps to enable clean-boot will be as follows:

  • On the Services tab, enable «hide Microsoft services» and then disable all third party services.
  • Click OK and restart the computer.
  • Return the cancellation is made changes the same way.

Note: on the contribution of «General» in msconfig you could also notice the «Diagnostic startup». In fact, it’s the same clean boot Windows, but not giving the possibility to control what will be loaded. On the other hand, as a first step before diagnosis and the search FOR that can cause problems diagnostic startup can be useful.

Examples of using the clean boot

Some possible scenarios when a clean boot of Windows can be useful:

    • If you cannot install the program or delete it via the built-in Uninstaller in normal mode (you have to manually start the service Windows Installer).
    • Does not start in normal mode for some obscure reason (not the lack of the necessary files, and something else).
    • You cannot perform actions on any folders or files because they are used (on this topic see also: How to delete a file or folder that are not deleted).
    • Appear inexplicable error in the system. In this case, diagnosis can be long — starting with a clean boot, and if no error appears, try to include one third-party service, and then «startup» programs, rebooting each time, to identify the item causing the problem.

And one more thing: if you are running Windows 10 or 8 you can’t get the «normal boot» in msconfig, that is always after restarting the system configuration there is «Selective startup», do not worry — this is normal behavior of the system, if you set up manually (or via software) to run services and removed the programs from startup.
