What distinguishes the Anglican communion from Catholic?

Christianity, common in the first century ad, subsequently divided into a huge variety of currents. The most dramatic scenes were «Great schism» – the split Western and Eastern Christianity with mutual curse of the Pope and the Patriarch of Constantinople (mid 11th century) and the age of reformation (16th – early 17th centuries). The emergence of Anglicanism relates to the reformation and dates back to 1534, when the English Parliament proclaimed the independence of the national Church from Rome. What distinguishes the Anglican communion from Catholic and what caused the difference, if you have it? Let us examine in more detail.

A little bit about the emergence of the Anglican Church

The term «Anglicanism» (anglicanism in Latin) had appeared a few centuries before the historic decision of the Parliament. However, when he meant only a national Church within Catholicism. And in the 16th century, when continental Europe was storming across the reformation, which began «from below», i.e. on the initiative of the people (remember Luther’s «95 theses», which gave rise to German Protestantism, 1517 this year), England decided to go another way. Realizing that the reformation «from below» is poorly predictable and threatens public disasters (as happened on the continent), an English autocrat decided to do the same Royal command.

And I must say, opponents among the nobility was a bit, because the dictates of Rome all tired. The clergy, too, is not not particularly angry, because after separation disappeared the obligation to pay Dad part of the Church’s profits. The reason for the rupture was the refusal of the Pope to annul the marriage of the then English king Henry VIII. We must not forget that in terms of the monarchy, the matrimonial aspirations of the king – mostly big-time politics, not family matters, and the refusal of the Pope was dictated by data considerations. But Henry was a man of resolute and fearless (by the way, he is a character in the famous novel by Mark TWAIN «the Prince and the pauper»), so his submission to the Parliament and spoke about the branch of the national Church from Catholicism.

And yet, unlike the Anglican Church is Catholic only in the absence of relations of subordination (i.e., subordination) or something? Every branch of Christianity has its own «symbol of faith» – a system of fundamental dogmas, there is such and of Anglicanism. It is called the «39 articles» and passed in 1563 during the reign of Elizabeth I. of Course, it is different from the Catholic «Council of Trent the creed» the absence of dogma about the infallibility of the Pope and even by some provisions. For example, in the Anglican Church, in contrast to the Catholic, there is no celibacy (celibacy of the clergy). According to Anglican doctrine, if the priest will judge that to be saved he needs to marry, let them marry.

The Anglican Church remained the national Church, though quite large. According to various sources, the number of its adherents ranges from 25 to 85 million members in different countries, although most of them are, of course, lives in the UK and its former colonies:

  • Australia;
  • New Zealand;
  • USA;
  • Nigeria;
  • in some other States.

However, perhaps crucially, «who believes». Due to the General decline of religiosity in Western Europe the churches are empty, and many consider themselves followers of any religion «out of habit» or «tradition.» But in any case, the Anglican Church remains one of the largest Protestant denominations.

However, in comparison with the number of Catholic adherents of Anglicanism looks quite small. Today the number of believers, recognizes as its Supreme shepherd, the Pope, is slightly less than one billion two hundred million people. Catholicism, through the Reformation and Counter-reformation, were cleared from the accusations of critics (at least in part, because most of the claims were equitable) and managed to remain the largest religious denomination in the world. And this is, perhaps, most importantly, what is the difference between the Anglican and the Catholic Church.
