Many farmers are forced to work and to grow crops on heavy clay lands. Making such composite soils of sand changes the structure of such lands. But is it all just, if this is the right decision and will the sand?
Heavy clay soils are composed of many nutrients and are «fat» soils. The farmers physically difficult to dig, to loosen the soils. In the spring they swim up from the water, dry out summer much and turn into «asphalt» and to grow crops in such areas is problematic. As a rule, it is always recommended to improve the structure of soils, making organic matter, plant residues, peat or sand. The sand is the most available material for gardeners. And then there are «pitfalls».
What sand will improve the soil structure?
There are two types of sand: river and career (construction). With a career sand soil structure improves. On the contrary, added more clay to the site. Add should be only river sand. It differs from career flowability, light in color and dry and crumbles. Pit sand has a reddish (red) shades and coalesces in his hands. This sand is used only for the construction, in children’s sandboxes.
Introduction of river sand to the soil: for and against
Having a coarse structure, river sand is recommended to add around 2 buckets per square meter of soil. Scattering the sand, it should evenly redistribute (shuffle) in the soil, not less than 15…20 cm layer. But such activities require physical strength. For several years, heavy sand with precipitation, irrigation moves to the lower layers of the soil and earth of this becomes more friable. River sand often need to make one and submit it into the soil will fail. Such Sands are useful in soil mixes for growing seedlings, rooting cuttings.
Sand contains few nutrients and it is virtually useless, unlike organics.
