Warm water floor involves the use of various specific materials, the main of which are tubes and mats. The latter constitute the substrate, which is placed between the floor slab and cement screed.
The functions of the mats under warm water floor, as follows:
- the creation of the insulating layer, which will direct the flow of heat upwards. This gives you the opportunity not to spend extra energy to heat the slab, absolutely necessary;
- the mats for warm water floor take on a considerable burden: the weight of the pipe with the coolant, concrete ties, topcoats, plus the weight of people moving on the floor;
- hydro – mats create another barrier against possible leakage, which is important if you live in an apartment house;
- they also complete an additional sound insulation of the room.
The types of mounting mats for the water warm floor
There are several varieties of mats for warm floors. They differ not only in cost, but also technical parameters: method of fixing pipes, material of construction, etc. to choose one or the other option, we must proceed from the concrete situation:
Foil mats are one of the simplest and cheapest varieties. They are made of polyethylene, the heat insulation material is laid or other foamed polymer. On the one hand these mats have a foil layer that should be placed on top, under the pipes. This option is useful if your apartment is not on the first floor, the warm floor is not considered as the main source of heating, and the subfloor already has a thermal insulation layer in addition to mats. Otherwise, inevitably there will be heat loss, and warm floor-based foil mats will be ineffective. It should also be borne in mind that for laying the pipes on top of these mats will have to buy and set design in the form of a metal grid or «comb».
More practical are flat mats of EPPS (extruded polystyrene). Their advantage is the availability of fasteners for pipes and possibility to make a warm floor is the main heating source of the room. Among the shortcomings should be noted the need to lay under the mats is a layer of hydroprotection and independent of the applied marking lines (on many models they are not). In addition, it is advisable to select mats with a minimum thickness of 40-50 mm and a density of 40 kg/cubic meter – then they will reliably withstand the mechanical load of pipes filled with water.
Specialists in the installation of warm floors is highly praised mats of EPPS that have additional bottom coating film and top applied marking grid. These mats have a higher density and strength, very easy to install. They are rolled up into coils, zigzags, whereby decomposed, turning into a single surface without gaps. Adjacent rows are joined using the special grooves (lamellae) and tubes attached «combs» or staples.
Among the materials for the device of water warm floor best are profiled polystyrene mats. On their surface there are embossed ridges («boss»), between which tightly fit the pipe. This gives you the opportunity to eliminate the offset of the pipe while the screed. In addition, specialized mats have other advantages: perfect sound absorption due to the relief cellular structure, the low thermal conductivity of expanded polystyrene foam, convenient system of locks that enables you to gather mats in a continuous surface without gaps at the joints. Profile Mat can be with or without lamination it: the first is more reliable in terms of waterproofing.
To domestic firms established as producers of high quality mats for warm water floor are «Peewit» and «Energoflex». The best foreign companies that manufacture mats under the water warm floor is «Rehau», «Ecotherm», «Oventrop».
